Project catalyst and restoration approach
The primary catalyst for this project was persistent leaks to the original 1865 Victorian roof. Given the considerable expense of a full scaffold, the decision was made to carry out a comprehensive external restoration of the entire station. This required a team with deep expertise in heritage materials and modern engineering.
Multidisciplinary expertise
The Building Surveying and Infrastructure Engineering teams at Frankham were employed to provide a full scope of works and technical specification for the restoration. Our multidisciplinary team provided a single point of expertise for:
- Roof repairs and replacement to the four wings
- Installation of new, historically sympathetic roof cresting
- Structural assessment of the main roof to support the new cresting
- Detailed stone & brickwork repairs and repointing in traditional lime-based materials
- Repairs to original windows and cast iron gutter replacement
- Design of a new decorative balustrade ledge
- Structural assessment of the building to accommodate accessing scaffolding
